Having good conversations with all kinds of people doesn’t just come from being a kind person. All the people in the world have different ways of talking and interacting with one another. In other words, every culture is different. With an ever-growing mixed population in the United States it is important for us to be aware of how to communicate and have effective conversations with one another.
Having “people skills” can be more valuable than memorizing a listing of world cultures. People skills such as being interested in the person or people your around. Asking questions and learning about them is very important because we are trying to provide a service for them and should not be caring about ourselves.
I recently read a Cultural Diversity article that had 15 different religions and 20 different world cultures listed. They discussed each one in detail from the expected greeting, relationships between men and women in public, family hierarchy, and their view of healthcare. This article was intended to prepare me to know how to respect the different cultures in our society.
For the sake of our relationships in the medical field with our clients, I suggest we try and speak their language rather than forcing others to understand ours. This is a principle I teach to all of Care N Assist’s home health aides.
